Meriden CT started out as a rural sector of Wallingford, with a small group of farmers living in the North Farms area. In 1728, Meriden was formed as a Parish for residents to gather. When the railroad arrived in 1839, the town center was created. Meriden incorporated into a city in 1867. Many know Meriden as the Silver City, with it's early days of silver manufacturing at International Silver. In 1900, Castle Craig was dedicated to Hubbard Park which is now a great place for hiking and views of the city. Hubbard Park is a popular area for picnics, feeding the ducks, concerts at the bandstands and even weddings. It also has a great light display during the winter season and an amazing daffodil display in the Spring.
The city of Meriden currently has just under 60,000 residents. It is conveniently locked off of many major highways situated halfway between Hartford and New Haven. There is a hospital (Mid-state Medical Center) and a mall (Westfield Shopping Center) centrally located in the city. It also has plenty of other conveniences such as dining, grocery stores and entertainment. There are either elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools in Meriden. Current enrollment is approximately 8900 students.
